With the Commonwealth Games now in full swing, it is hard not to be caught up in the infectious excitement of the individual stories of striving against setbacks and challenges, of the coming together as a team to achieve more together than could be achieved individually. And as Australians, you can’t help but be caught in the success to date of the Australian team with its impressive medal tally, boosted by the host country advantage.
It’s not all just happening at the Gold Coast. The atmosphere of the Commonwealth Games started in Manly Harbour Village a week or so before the official opening with several bike riding teams that would be competing at the Anna Meares Velodrome, Chandler, officials, along with family and supporters, establishing their accommodation base in Manly and getting some early acclimatisation running and riding along the Esplanade.
The Village coffee shops, cafes and restaurants have been well patronized by international visitors from Scotland, Wales and New Zealand who have been made feel to feel very welcome by bayside locals.
Adding to the spectacle has been the coming and going of the silver and orange Gold Coast 2018 courtesy wagons with the rooftop bike racks for transporting the athletes and their gear.
