Several years ago, the concept of a Moreton Bay Discovery Centre was mooted for Manly Boat Harbour. Ideally, it would have a waterfront location where residents and visitors could go to discover the beauty and uniqueness of the bay, and to gain an understanding of its bird, mammal and fish life along with the natural, Indigenous and European history of Moreton Bay.
The Discovery Centre was planned to house an accredited Visitor Information Centre where visitors could book tours and accommodation, and source information about the Bayside area, as well as a café and highly interactive displays to inform, educate and entertain.
The location was very important. Several sites were explored, possible concepts developed, and dialogue held with government departments. A key attribute of the envisioned Moreton Bay Discovery Centre was that once fully developed, the centre would be self-funding.
When the opportunity to locate the Discovery Centre on the William Gunn Jetty was presented, the unique location over the water was immediately apparent.
The café and Visitor Information Centre are operating well. With the Discovery Centre building now complete, designs for the displays are being developed. Funding to complete the designs and fabricate the displays is currently being sought.
